Ultralight Flight over Victoria Falls

When I travelled through Zambia in August 2004, I not only enjoyed the stunning views of Victoria Falls from ground level, I also had the opportunity to take a joy flight in an ultralight over the “The Smoke that Thunders“. That was something I was not going to pass up!

Takeoff

You were not allowed to take your own camera onboard but you could give them a roll of 35mm film to go into the camera out on the wing (digital cameras were still rare back then). The results were fantastic!

Magnificent!

The falls are spectacular and to see them from above was a unique experience I will never forget. The only worry was seeing all those big crocodiles and hippos down below in the Zambesi River!

I love this! I’ve been in microlights since I was young since my dad flies them! Pretty cool aren’t they! 🙂 xXx

Hi Paris, yes they are a lot of fun! I flew with another French pilot in a float plane version in French Noumea once too. Sounds like you had a fun childhood? 🙂

Victoria Falls is not a simple nick point and I hadn’t realized that until I saw your photos. I’ll have to read up on it — maybe it’s part of the rifting in that part of Africa, or an eroded basaltic plain (or both). I don’t know. It occurs to me that “Victoria Falls” would be a good name for a British Punk band, as well 😉

It is massive and as the river curves below it, they were the older falls it replaced. Great name for a band!
